Description
Katsukawa Shunshō presents Ichikawa Danjūrō V standing against a sparse light background. A long red inner garment is framed by broad ochre and pale outer sleeves, making the clothing’s contrasting shapes central to the image. The figure’s upright presence allows this arrangement of color and cloth to carry the portrait without an elaborate surrounding scene.
Made around 1775, the print was produced in ink and color on paper. Its subject offers a quieter kind of theatrical encounter than a titled battle or revelation. A single actor, held in a standing position, becomes enough to sustain the image. Shunshō preserves the connection between a public name and a visible figure, leaving the role’s wider story open rather than filling it with an uncertain narrative.
