Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V appears as a warrior on a gray patterned horse, the mounted figure rising along a strong diagonal before a tree. Elaborate upper costume and headwear give the rider an emphatic presence above the animal. Katsukawa Shunshō makes horse and actor part of a shared theatrical image, joining the named performer to a character whose appearance extends beyond the body itself.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s 1771 color woodblock print gives this portrayal a durable form in ink and color on paper. Seen outside the unfolding drama, the subject becomes an encounter between performer, character and mount. Its interest lies in that layered presence, allowing a specific theatrical identity to remain engaging without an unsupported explanation of the scene’s action or narrative.
