Description
Segawa Kikunojō III appears as a woman beneath a maple tree in autumn, joining a female theatrical role to a seasonal setting. A prominent female-role figure at the left wears an immense patterned sleeve, while another figure stands to the right beneath autumn maple leaves. The broad costume shapes make the encounter feel relational, giving the named actor a counterpart within a shared seasonal setting.
Created around 1778, the nishiki-e print uses ink and color on paper. Its interest lies in the meeting of performance and season, where a represented person is given more than a costume to inhabit. Kikunojō’s presence connects the subject to the theater, while the autumnal setting adds another rhythm beyond the role alone. Katsukawa Shunshō makes that combination available to a sustained look, preserving an encounter between staged identity and a recognizably changing world.
