Description
Scene from a Drama brings two actors into confrontation in an unnamed theatrical encounter. A dark-robed female-role figure at the left holds an arm near the face, opposite a warrior whose bold angular shoulder garment fills the right. Katsukawa Shunshō gives their contrasting appearances a shared space, inviting attention to the relationship between them while leaving the precise play and circumstances open.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print dates to around 1778 and uses ink and color on paper. The medium carries an event intended to unfold in time into a lasting visual form, encouraging repeated attention to the scene. Its interest lies in that transition, inviting the viewer to encounter the human presence of theater without turning an incomplete identification into an invented account of a specific plot.
