Description
Katsukawa Shunshō places Nakamura Nakazō I’s monk role beside a massive dark trunk. Blue water and green rock introduce a compact natural setting, while the figure’s light robe separates him from the tree’s weight. A hand raised near the face gives the scene a held gesture of attention, leaving the actor’s thought or intention open.
Dated to the second month of 1771, the work was printed in ink and color on paper. The role gives the image a specific dramatic identity without requiring the surrounding story to be reconstructed. Shunshō preserves the meeting between performer and character, allowing the actor’s own presence to carry an assumed spiritual rank. The portrait’s interest lies in that transformation, where theatrical presentation turns a named individual into a recognizable figure of another world.
