Description

A woman in colorful robes occupies the lower-right area of the pale painted field, with a small light butterfly appearing above and to the left. Patterned mounting surrounds the quiet central scene. Katsukawa Shunshō brings figure and delicate natural subject into relation, allowing their separated positions to encourage attention to the space between them without imposing a narrative.

Painted in ink and color on silk during the eighteenth century, the hanging scroll brings Shunshō’s sensitivity to figure subjects into a painted format. The work belongs to Edo-period Japan, yet its immediate appeal lies in the relationship named by the image rather than a broad historical explanation. It invites close looking without assigning unsupported emotions or symbolic meanings to the woman or the butterflies.
