Description
A woman stands beneath drooping willow branches in the pale central field of this mounted hanging scroll. Her small dark-robed figure contrasts with the spacious ground, while patterned textile mounting encloses the painting. Katsukawa Shunshō’s early-summer scene is joined by a poem composed and inscribed by Fūdo, allowing figure, tree and written voice to share a contemplative encounter.
Painted in ink and color on silk during the eighteenth century, the hanging scroll brings the sensitivity of an artist known for figure subjects into a quieter setting. The willow is more than a decorative frame: it helps connect the woman to the poem’s natural imagery. The work rewards attention to the relationship between person, plant and written expression rather than an elaborate narrative.
