Description
Fukurokuju appears as a stooped, long-headed figure with a staff beneath dense inscription. The deity’s association with wisdom and long life gives the unusual bodily form a recognizable identity. Katsukawa Shunshō’s restrained painted figure shares the scroll with a substantial area of writing, bringing visual and written expression into a single encounter.
The hanging scroll combines Shunshō’s ink-and-color painting on paper with an inscription by Tegara no Okamochi. The inscription was added in 1798, after Shunshō’s lifetime, giving the earlier painting a further layer of expression through the calligrapher’s written contribution. Image and later writing form a shared encounter across time, bringing the deity’s associations with longevity into a work whose own history includes more than one creative contribution.
