Description
Katsukawa Shunshō’s Scene from a Drama joins two actors in a horizontal encounter. The upper-left figure raises an arm and weapon from patterned robes, while a broadly red-clad figure at the lower right spreads the legs in an emphatic stance. A bucket stands on the ground, giving the expansive gestures a modest, concrete object around which the scene unfolds.
Dated 1770, the work was printed in ink and color on paper. The image preserves theater through a lasting pictorial form, separating a brief stage event from the passage of time. Shunshō’s subject can be approached through the relationships visible within the composition without forcing a precise narrative onto it. The title’s restraint is useful: it keeps the work’s dramatic identity while acknowledging that the surrounding roles and action remain incompletely recorded.
