Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V stands as a high-ranking samurai beneath an interior ceiling grid. Broad patterned red shoulder panels spread above long white patterned trousers, giving the formal costume an emphatic structure. Katsukawa Shunshō joins the named actor to martial status through dress, retaining the particular performer within the rank assumed by his character.
Dating to around 1778, the color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. It gives a portrayed role a lasting visual form beyond the time of its performance. The work’s interest lies in that continuing relationship between actor and character, where rank becomes part of an individual presentation without requiring a speculative play identification or an invented account of the surrounding action.
