Description
Katsukawa Shunshō gives Yamashita Kinsaku II’s female role a long dark floral robe edged in red. A hand rises toward the face, introducing a small, concentrated gesture above the garment’s broad fall. The pale surrounding field and a simple floor line keep the figure’s appearance clear, making clothing and bodily attention the portrait’s most immediate features.
Made around 1780, the work was printed in ink and color on paper. Its subject preserves the particularity of a performer even when the surrounding episode is uncertain. Shunshō’s image can be approached through that durable connection between name and appearance. The portrait offers a way to encounter an individual from the world of Kabuki without inventing a story beyond the available identification, leaving the performer’s presence as the work’s central human interest.
