Description
Katsukawa Shunshō’s portrait of Ichikawa Yaozō III as Sukeroku places the black-robed actor beneath a broad umbrella with a reddish center. A raised hand holds its shaft, while a sword remains at the figure’s side. The dark clothing and umbrella create a composed presence, making the small upward gesture carry much of the portrait’s movement.
Dated 1784, the work was printed in ink and color on paper. A theatrical portrait such as this can be encountered as more than a record of costume: it preserves the act of becoming a character. Shunshō keeps that relationship concentrated in a single image. Yaozō’s identity gives the role its human anchor, while Sukeroku supplies the world of drama through which the performer is presented.
