Description

In Studies of Horses, Eugène Delacroix sets a larger equine body and profile above smaller trials of heads, legs and whole animals. The pale pencil marks leave much of the paper open, allowing separate observations to remain distinct without forming a single continuous landscape. Differences of scale make the sheet feel like a sequence of encounters with the horse’s changing form.

The drawing combines graphite with traces of brown ink on laid paper. Delacroix attends both to the animal as a whole and to parts that help establish its structure, letting each study contribute something different. The open arrangement preserves an exploratory quality, with small variations carrying more interest than a finished background. The sheet invites close attention to line and proportion, making repeated observation itself the subject of an engaging equestrian study.
