O'Keeffe, Georgia
Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) was a leading American modernist whose paintings brought a distinctive clarity to flowers, landscapes, and architectural forms. Born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, she developed an individual approach to abstraction through drawings and paintings that used color and shape to express her experience of the world. Alfred Stieglitz first exhibited her work in 1916. Her subjects later included New York skyscrapers and the landscapes of New Mexico, where she settled permanently in 1949. Across these varied subjects, O’Keeffe’s art invites close attention to familiar forms and the feelings they can evoke.
