Description

Kitagawa Utamaro’s Komurasaki stands in a dark floral robe looking toward her seated lover Gompachi, whose pale and red clothing offers a clear contrast. Their different levels give the encounter a quiet sense of direction, linking standing and seated figures within the same intimate setting. A circular inset at the upper left adds another framed image to the composition.

Made around 1795, this ink-and-color woodblock print identifies its subject as shared feelings in the lovers’ bedchamber. Utamaro expresses that relation through proximity and attention rather than a complete narrative sequence. The standing figure’s gaze helps connect the two, while their garments distinguish their individual presences. The print lets a personal exchange occupy the foreground, with the inset introducing a further pictorial layer without displacing the human encounter.
