Description
A cool breeze draws women and children to the broad railing of a bridge, with parasols rising among the crowd. The pale evening setting gives the busy figures a shared space for enjoying the cool breeze. Kitagawa Utamaro makes leisure an encounter between people and place, allowing the familiar structure to connect different positions within the wide scene.
Dating to around 1800, the ink-and-color woodblock composition gives a temporary evening experience a continuing visual presence. The bridge’s broad rail organizes the crowd while the raised parasols distinguish smaller groups within it. The work invites the viewer to follow those relationships at an unhurried pace, allowing the atmosphere named in the title to become a human experience through the people who gather in the setting.
