Description

Women and children fish and bathe along a rocky shore in Kitagawa Utamaro’s wide triptych. Pale garments and exposed skin contrast with the textured ground, while fishing rods rise at the right and waves sweep behind the figures. The extended composition allows several activities to share one setting without losing their individual human interest.

Made in 1791, the three-part woodblock work uses ink and color on paper. Its breadth joins a close encounter with the shore’s inhabitants to a wider sense of water and movement. Utamaro lets recreation and bodily activity coexist within the landscape rather than making one action carry the entire image. The scene’s pleasure lies in its variety, where neighboring figures offer different ways of occupying the same lively stretch of coast.
