Description
A white-robed man sits near the shore, with two attendants below and beside him, in Kitagawa Utamaro’s Exile of Yukihira at Suma. Water, trees and stylized clouds give the figures a spacious setting. The literary subject acquires its presence through this relationship between a small company and the landscape surrounding it.
Published in 1789, the woodblock print was made with ink and color on paper. Utamaro gives the remembered subject a tangible form, allowing a story associated with distance and displacement to be considered through an image. Its interest lies in that meeting of literary identity and represented circumstance. The work invites attention to a person situated elsewhere, where the experience of being removed from one world creates an encounter with another.
