Description
The Full Moon at the Time of the Imo Harvest rises above a landscape of winding water, shore and distant mountains. Small figures gather at the left while a simple roofed structure occupies the right, giving human activity a modest place within the wider scene. Kitagawa Utamaro connects the moon at the time of the imo harvest with a landscape whose quiet breadth invites unhurried looking.
The woodblock print is dated to the eighth month of 1789 and uses ink and color on paper. Its Edo-period identity is specific, yet the subject invites attention to a recurring experience of time and season. The work gives a named moon and harvest occasion a continuing visual presence, allowing that connection to remain available beyond the moment in which it was observed.
