Description
Women gather on a pleasure boat beneath Ryōgoku Bridge, with a floral-robed figure standing prominently before seated companions. Kitagawa Utamaro brings the public space of the Sumida River into contact with the intimacy of a small party. The cropped vertical view concentrates on the people aboard rather than presenting the whole river panorama.
Made around 1796 in ink and color on paper, the original print formed one sheet of a six-part woodblock composition. The wider format matters to the source, while this view gives one portion its own human interest. Utamaro’s scene joins recreation to a shared urban setting, allowing the boat to become a place of temporary companionship beneath the bridge. Its appeal lies in that meeting of private company and the life of the river around it.
