Description

Kitagawa Utamaro brings three Niwaka festival performers into a close cluster of faces and patterned clothing. A broad yellow hat rises above them, while checked and other patterned robes introduce variety below. The gray field keeps the group’s outlines clear, allowing differences in costume and bearing to give the compact arrangement a lively sense of company.

Made around 1791, the work is an ink-and-color woodblock print. The museum title locates the figures within the festival’s geisha performances, giving costume a connection to staged roles rather than simply everyday appearance. Utamaro concentrates on the performers themselves, making their proximity central to the image. The contrasting hat and garments help distinguish individual presences within a shared occasion, inviting attention to a gathering whose theatrical character is expressed through people and dress.
