Description

Kitagawa Utamaro’s Lady of Rokujō and Princess Aoi occupy a pale interior organized around a low partition or table. A seated woman appears at the lower right, with another figure beyond a screen. A hanging tree-and-flower motif at the left adds a decorative presence, while restrained ochre tones make the setting feel quieter than a brightly colored crowd scene.

Made around 1805, the work is cataloged as an ink-and-color woodblock print. The named literary figures give the meeting a specific identity, but Utamaro concentrates its visual interest within an intimate room. Screen, partition and the different levels of the figures establish relationships through space. The subdued appearance encourages attention to those small divisions and connections, allowing a visit to become a carefully balanced encounter rather than an expansive narrative illustration.
