Description
O-Shichi and Kichisaburō share an extremely narrow panel, with a standing woman’s head above and another figure partly cropped below. The pale field makes their unequal positions especially distinct. Kitagawa Utamaro brings the named lovers into a compact encounter, allowing the closeness of their figures to carry the scene within its unusually confined vertical design.
Dating to around 1780, the woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. It gives the named pair a continuing visual presence beyond the imagined moment, where their association can remain the center of attention. The work’s interest lies in that particular meeting, without requiring a speculative account of dialogue, intentions or the consequences of an action that the available record does not securely describe.
