Description
Rikiya and Konami form a close pair as he bends toward her kneeling figure, their simple robes and differing heights setting them against spare ground. Small objects sit low beside them without overtaking the figures’ presence. Kitagawa Utamaro makes the named characters a particular encounter within A Program with Music about Loving Couples, allowing posture and proximity to shape their shared visual identity.
The 1798 woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Its title connects visual portrayal with a musical program, giving the individual scene a context beyond a simple likeness. The image’s interest lies in the meeting of two identified figures within that project, where a relationship becomes a lasting encounter without requiring a speculative account of dialogue, action or the scene’s outcome.
