Description

Kitagawa Utamaro’s Kasugano of the Ogiya appears with attendants beneath densely flowering cherry branches. Intricate layers of clothing and raised hair ornaments give the group a richly varied surface, while the blossoms connect the parade with the surrounding season. The figures form a shared procession in which elaborate dress remains closely tied to public appearance.

Made around 1788, the work is an ink-and-color woodblock print. The museum title identifies Kasugano as an oiran, a high-ranking courtesan, giving the central presence a specific social identity. Utamaro places the group within a flowering setting rather than separating costume from its occasion. The image encourages attention to repeated patterns and individual positions, preserving both the ceremonial character of the parade and the visual abundance of cherry blossom time.
