Description

In The Making of Silk Floss, Kitagawa Utamaro arranges three women around a broad pale mass of material stretched across the lower foreground. A tall yellow structural frame rises above their work, while bamboo-like rails help define the surrounding space. The spread of the fiber connects the figures, making a shared task the composition’s central movement.

Made around 1790, the work is an ink-and-color woodblock print. Its subject directs attention toward preparation and handling rather than the finished appearance of a garment. Utamaro gives practical labor a clear pictorial structure, balancing the light material below with the taller framework above. The women remain distinct within the common activity, allowing the viewer to notice how the task brings separate bodies into one organized encounter.
