Description

A Farm in Brittany by Paul Gauguin sets red-roofed buildings among tall, slender trees and rounded masses of foliage. Fields rise behind the farm in broad bands of pink, green and earthy red, giving the familiar rural scene an unexpectedly vivid rhythm.

The composition moves between the long line of the roofs and the vertical accents of trunks and chimneys. Loose, visible brushwork and a softly luminous sky lend the landscape a calm atmosphere, while the strong color relationships give each part of the view its own character.
