Description

A Landscape with an Old Oak (or Beech) Tree places a spreading tree at the heart of a softly colored rural view. Pale blue and green washes meet warmer earth tones, while small figures give the broad canopy and surrounding ground a human scale.

Dated about 1796, this watercolor over graphite is catalogued by The Metropolitan Museum of Art as formerly attributed to J. M. W. Turner. Its gentle transitions of color and branching silhouette reward a quiet, sustained look, balancing the tree’s substantial presence with the openness of the landscape.
