Description

The Tenth Plague of Egypt shows women mourning a dead child before temples and towers clustered around a pyramid, lightning flashing from dark clouds above. J. M. W. Turner gives The Tenth Plague of Egypt a landscape in which human grief and monumental architecture share the scene. The nearer group brings the biblical catastrophe into a particular encounter, while the charged sky extends its atmosphere across the distant structures.

Issued in 1816 for Liber Studiorum, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with William Say adding tonal engraving. The composition derives from Turner’s painting exhibited in 1802 and represents the plague described in Exodus. Its printed structure connects the small scale of mourning with the vast built setting, making the contrast between individual loss and surrounding grandeur central to the image.
