Description

A crouched lioness dominates Eugène Delacroix’s ink drawing A Lioness and a Caricature of Ingres, her body facing right beneath a strongly arched flank. The head and ear form a clear profile, while a much smaller exaggerated human face appears at the upper left. The difference in scale brings an unexpected contrast to the page, joining close animal observation with a brief caricatural presence.

Made in the 1850s, the drawing uses pen and brown ink on laid paper. The museum identifies the small face as a caricature of Ingres, giving the sheet two distinct kinds of likeness. Delacroix lets the larger animal’s contour carry visual weight, while the tiny human study remains a sharp secondary note. Their coexistence preserves the varied life of a working page, where seriousness and humor can share the same drawn surface.
