Description
In Rebecca and the Wounded Ivanhoe, Rebecca reaches toward a bright window as the wounded Ivanhoe rises from his bed. Delacroix sets the pair against a shadowy room, where hanging armor and a red curtain deepen the sense of danger.
The sweep of pale bedding connects their urgent gestures, while jewel-like blues and reds enliven the dark interior. The scene balances intimacy with suspense: the drama outside is felt through the two figures watching it. The work is by Eugène Delacroix.
