Description
A Maid Asleep by Johannes Vermeer, painted around 1656–57, centers on a woman resting her head on one hand at a table. A patterned carpet, fruit and a pale jug crowd the foreground, while an open doorway leads into a quieter, sparsely furnished room beyond.
The contrast between the richly layered table and the still figure gives A Maid Asleep its absorbing atmosphere. Warm reds, deep shadows and soft light encourage a slow look at the spaces surrounding this moment of private repose.
