Description
A Man Stabbing Another presents two men fighting low to the ground in a violent encounter. The compressed position gives the struggle an immediate physical character, leaving little distance between the acting body and the person subjected to it. Goya makes the event difficult to regard as a remote or abstract instance of conflict.
The drawing from the Images of Spain album combines gray and brown washes, allowing the bodies to retain a searching, unsettled surface. Its force comes from the close scale of the encounter, where violence is enacted through a few people rather than explained by a broad setting. The image asks the viewer to remain with that proximity, making the harm tangible without supplying a reassuring account of its cause.
