Description
A Nun Frightened by a Ghost presents a guitar-playing apparition above a huddled woman, joining music to a startling encounter. The difference between the apparition’s activity and the woman’s withdrawn posture gives the scene an uncanny humor. Goya makes fear visible through the body while allowing its cause to take a form that is both threatening and absurd.
This drawing from the Images of Spain album uses brown ink washes and chalk to give the imagined visitor and human witness a shared visual world. The work’s fascination lies in that meeting of incompatible presences, where a familiar instrument becomes part of a supernatural disturbance. The scene remains ambiguous enough to invite several responses, balancing the comic strangeness of the ghost with the immediate vulnerability of the person below.
