Description

In Abraham Casting Out Hagar and Ishmael, Rembrandt gathers a man, woman and child at a gate. The threshold gives the biblical separation a particular place, bringing the people together at the point where their paths divide. The compact scene lets the human relationship carry the subject, with the nearby boundary making departure tangible without describing the whole journey that follows.

The 1637 etching gives the biblical expulsion a close human scale. Abraham’s decision concerns more than a gesture alone: Hagar and Ishmael bring the presence of a mother and child into the encounter. Rembrandt makes their separation tangible through the figures’ relationship, allowing a charged narrative to unfold within a particular arrangement rather than through an expansive account of the journey beyond it.
