Description

Adam and Eve by Albrecht Dürer places two luminous figures against the dark density of a wooded landscape. Adam and Eve stand in carefully balanced poses on either side of a tree, their gestures bringing attention to the fruit and the coiled serpent. Animals rest or move among the roots, adding a quiet complexity to the scene.

Created in 1504, this engraving joins the biblical subject with Dürer’s study of ideal human proportion. The smooth modeling of the figures contrasts with bark, leaves and fur, demonstrating how much texture and depth he could achieve through line alone. The composition holds a moment before the consequences of the encounter unfold, making its beauty inseparable from a sense of impending change.
