Description
Vincent van Gogh’s Adeline Ravoux, painted in 1890, brings a young sitter’s profile into a vivid arrangement of color. Her blond hair and blue-green clothing stand against a deep blue background, with pale flowers providing a lively accent beside the figure. Adeline was the thirteen-year-old daughter of the innkeeper in Auvers where Van Gogh lodged, but the portrait’s focus remains the distinct presence established by face, posture and painted surface.
Van Gogh’s portrait invites looking at the individual marks as well as the larger arrangement they form. Changes of direction and color can establish an edge, model a feature or connect the figure with the background. The sitter remains the center of the image, but the painting’s activity is carried throughout its surface. Adeline’s likeness becomes an encounter between observation and pictorial construction, with the figure held in a space shaped by the artist’s decisions about emphasis, proportion and color.
