Description

Peter Paul Rubens’s Alcibiades Interrupting the Symposium, drawn around 1601–02, compresses an animated gathering into a lightly worked horizontal sheet. The figures form a small, faint band within a broad expanse of paper, with loose indications of bodies and limbs below. Brown pen over black chalk records a scene of interruption without concealing the exploratory marks through which its relationships were developed.

The scene comes from Plato’s Symposium, but Rubens compresses different moments into an active arrangement of gestures. Alcibiades carries wreaths associated with honoring Agathon and Socrates, and the figures respond with distinct expressions and movements. The drawing makes intellectual exchange inseparable from the social energy of the gathering. Separate studies on the reverse belong to other subjects, so the represented side remains a particular narrative invention: a meeting disrupted, and an image animated by the relationships among those present.
