Description
Eugène Delacroix’s anatomical studies isolate legs and their muscular forms in a vertical arrangement of red and black marks. Separate views allow the limb’s structure to be examined from different positions, giving the sheet a sequence of focused observations. The limited subject makes changes in contour and internal form substantial, without requiring a complete figure or surrounding room.
The work is a counterproof from a drawing in red and black chalk, with further black chalk additions. That combination preserves transferred marks while allowing the study to continue through new intervention. Delacroix’s attention rests on the body’s construction, letting the legs become subjects in their own right. The sheet invites close looking at the relation between repeated form and individual adjustment, where anatomy is explored through both the mechanics and expressive possibilities of drawing.
