Description
André Antoine and Fermin Gémier occupy a stage scene, a man in a black coat at the left facing a heavier, paler figure at the right within doorway lines. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec portrays André Antoine and Fermin Gémier in A Bankruptcy. Their differing forms and shared space make the performance a particular encounter rather than separate actor portraits.
The 1893 crayon lithograph is printed in black ink on wove paper. Its monochrome graphic form carries an event intended to unfold in time into a lasting image. The encounter’s interest lies in that change of pace, where the named actors and their shared dramatic setting can remain available to close attention beyond a performance’s duration and where their particular portrayal gives the scene its human focus.
