Description
Angels Restraining the Four Winds gathers commanding winged figures above and among a crowded human assembly. Trees, faces and curling clouds fill the space, while the angels’ weapons and gestures establish opposing directions of movement. A broad landscape remains visible behind them, making the supernatural gathering feel connected to the world it oversees.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut from The Apocalypse gives the subject a rich variety of scale and texture. Heavy robes contrast with feathers and foliage, while the closely set faces keep the scene alive with individual responses. The image balances restraint with energy, creating a moment in which powerful forces seem held in check even as every part of the composition remains animated.
