Description
Apollo and Diana by Albrecht Dürer brings two classical figures together in a closely framed landscape. Apollo stands with a drawn bow, his turning body creating a strong line of tension, while Diana sits nearby with a quieter, attentive presence. The contrast between the active archer and seated companion gives the scene its immediate visual balance.
Engraved around 1503, the work is especially engaging for Dürer’s treatment of the bodies through fine lines and subtle shadow. The bow’s narrow curve contrasts with the larger forms of limbs and torso, making the act of aiming physically clear. The compact arrangement keeps the mythological subject intimate, finding its appeal in poised movement, human proportion and the relationship between the two figures.
