Description
Arashi Sangorō stands as a samurai on the veranda of a great house, joining a warrior role to an architectural threshold. The richly patterned figure stands on a wooden veranda beneath a hanging blind, arms held across the body with a railing behind. The architecture provides a layered setting for the actor’s composed presence, joining a warrior role to a precisely located threshold.
Dated to 1774 or 1775, the nishiki-e sheet was printed in ink and color on paper and originally formed one part of a triptych. Its wider format matters to the composition, while this panel offers a focused encounter with Sangorō’s character. The veranda supplies a sense of place and position, allowing the figure to inhabit an environment rather than merely display rank. Katsukawa Shunshō preserves one theatrical presence within a larger dramatic arrangement.
