Description

A tall architectural elevation fills this pen-and-ink study after Michelangelo. Columns, successive levels and rows of niches organize the monument’s face, while small sculptural forms appear along the upper section. The drawing presents architecture as an ordered relationship of parts, allowing the eye to move between the overall vertical arrangement and its finer divisions. Its careful lines make the structure legible on the paper’s flat surface.

The museum attributes the sheet to an artist working after Michelangelo, rather than to Michelangelo himself, and gives no definite date. That distinction preserves its character as a record or interpretation of an architectural design. The drawing’s appeal lies in how much can be suggested through measured linear structure: depth, ornament and scale emerge from relatively economical means. A monumental conception becomes available for close study, with each level contributing to the elevation’s cumulative rhythm.
