Description
At Les Ambassadeurs, an orange-toned singer appears in profile at the right with an arm raised against green and blue stage panels. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives Les Ambassadeurs a particular café-concert presence through a figure in performance. The colored setting and directed gesture make the encounter immediate, allowing the person and the surrounding stage to share the image’s graphic energy.
The 1894 lithograph uses crayon, brush and spatter printed in six colors on wove paper. Those different means of mark-making give the scene a varied graphic surface, connecting the subject’s human presence with a particular printed form. The work’s interest lies in the lasting encounter it offers with a named place, where a café-concert occasion can be considered beyond the fleeting duration of performance.
