Description
Sarah Bernhardt sits at the right with her head supported by a hand in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Phèdre scene. A lighter attendant appears toward the left, while dense marks darken the space behind them. The resting head gives the principal figure a contained, inward posture, contrasting with the companion’s separate presence within the stage arrangement.
Dated 1893, this object is a photomechanical reproduction of a lithograph on machine-wove paper, published by L’Escarmouche. That medium distinguishes the impression from an original lithographic sheet while retaining Toulouse-Lautrec’s design. The work joins a performer’s individual identity with a public dramatic association, preserving one encounter within the world of theater. Its interest lies in the meeting of a recognizable artist and the role through which she is represented.
