Description
Bacchanal spreads a lively company across a horizontal drawing, with nude figures, small children and animals joining its crowded movement. A rider rises near the middle, while a goat-like creature at the front and a running figure at the right keep the action moving outward. Nicolas Poussin’s brown lines and washes connect the groups without smoothing away their individual gestures.
Drawn around 1635–36 with pen and brown ink over faint chalk, the sheet finds an energetic form for a mythological celebration. The darker wash passages give bodies and surrounding forms different levels of emphasis, while open paper allows the separate actions to remain legible. The result balances abundance with structure: the eye can follow the gathering as a whole, then return to the smaller incidents carried within it.
