Description
Bandō Mitsugorō appears as Soga no Jūrō in this actor print by Katsukawa Shunshō, made in 1781. The upright figure is enclosed by a patterned robe whose broad surface gives the costume a strong presence. The standing arrangement allows the performer to appear composed and individual, with the ornament adding richness without requiring a crowded scene around him.
The nishiki-e technique uses ink and color printed on paper, translating a transient theatrical appearance into a lasting image. Shunshō keeps the role central without allowing it to erase the actor behind it. The print’s appeal lies in that relationship between a familiar dramatic identity and its particular embodiment. It invites attention to how a story becomes human through a performer, rather than treating the character as an anonymous figure detached from the theater.
