Description
Bathers sets a group of figures beside water beneath leafy trees and a bright, open sky. Standing, seated, and bending bodies create a loose rhythm across the landscape, while cool blues and greens mingle with warm touches of flesh and earth. The visible brushwork gives the scene a fresh, restless energy.
Painted by Paul Cézanne in 1874–75, this is an early treatment of a subject he would revisit throughout his career. Drawn from imagination and his knowledge of earlier art, the composition treats figures and setting as interlocking forms within a sunlit whole.
