Description
In Berthe Morisot with a Muff, Édouard Manet gives the sitter a close, lively presence within a brown-toned setting. Her winter clothing and feathered hat frame the pale face, while broad strokes allow dark fabric, muff, and surrounding space to meet without crisp separation. The turned head and alert eyes keep the portrait from becoming merely a display of costume.
Painted around 1871–72 in oil on canvas, the portrait uses wide brushwork and crosshatched shadows that echo the sketchlike quality of Morisot’s own painting. Manet kept the work throughout his life. Its apparent informality is part of its character: the face remains keenly present even as the clothing loosens into visible marks, holding likeness and the act of painting in an unusually intimate balance.
